Echodyne, the radar platform company, announced today that Echodyne CTO, Dr. Tom Driscoll, will be addressing the 20th Annual European Radar Conference (EuRAD 2023) in Berlin, Germany. Driscoll will address the opening session of EuRAD 2023 with a talk titled, “Phased Array Radar for an Era of Autonomy: Progress, Challenges and Outlook,” which will be held on Wednesday, September 20th at 9:10 am CEST.
EuRAD 2023 is a sub-conference of the 26th Edition of the European Microwave Week (EuMW), Europe’s premier microwave, radio frequency (RF), wireless, and radar event, which takes place over September 17-22nd in Berlin. EuRAD will feature discussions over September 20-22nd from international experts, engineers, and scientists on trends and new developments in all aspects of radar systems for a large variety of civil, security, automotive, defense, and medical applications.
During Driscoll’s talk, he will discuss how the rapid increase in capability and prevalence of autonomous systems is driving demand for new and better sensors. He will also dive into how phased array radars - including multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) phased arrays - are capable of the high-performance required to meet modern day needs. While these radars have been historically out of reach due to cost and complexity, they are now available at commercial prices.
“At Echodyne, we are pioneering a next-generation radar architecture that provides the kind of high performance necessary to meet the growing presence of autonomous systems,” said Tom Driscoll, CTO and Co-Founder of Echodyne. “I’m excited to address the opening session of EuRAD 2023 to share Echodyne’s experiences with novel radar designs and to discuss how new approaches to radars can benefit autonomous machines.”
Echodyne’s proprietary metamaterials electronically scanned array (MESA®) is a rare technology breakthrough in radar design and manufacturing. A MESA radar uses common materials arranged in a special way to precisely steer radar energy from a much denser array without phase shifters, moving parts, or maintenance of any kind. With radically reduced size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C), Echodyne’s MESA radar design unlocks advanced radar solutions for more markets, more applications, and more users and reinvents what commercial radar can achieve.
